Clarice finally finds the most important clue to Bill's identity hidden in the false bottom of Fredrica's music box this is a typical spot where young girls hide secret items, and one that none of the other investigators, undoubtedly all male, ever thought to check. When visiting the Bimmel residence, Fredrica's father implies that the police already searched the house for clues many times, but nothing was ever found. This theme continues throughout the movie, and it implicitly pays off in the end, as it is actually Clarice's unique female point of view that solves the case: a lead from Hannibal Lecter convinces her that Buffalo Bill was familiar with his first victim, Fredrica Bimmel.

The movie opens with Clarice making her way through the FBI building, where she is clearly one of the few women in a male-dominated environment. This would also explain why the FBI finds Bill's registered home in Calumet City empty. Lippman, stashed the body away and kept paying the bills, so that he could secretly use her home to imprison and kill his victims. Lippman had moved away, so what probably happened was that Jack Gordon/Buffalo Bill killed Mrs.
In such a small community, Stacy probably would have known if Mrs. Lippman's sewing aides, Clarice goes to her residence, only to find Jack Gordon there who claims that Mrs. Hoping that Buffalo Bill is another one of Mrs. Lippman's residence where they both helped her with sewing. Clarice then asks Frederica's friend Stacy if Fredrica had a boyfriend Stacy denies this, and points her to Mrs. To speculate what happened to her: Clarice finds clues that Fredrica Bimmel knew Bill when she discovers the semi-nude pictures, which may have been taken by him. Some of these deleted scenes can be viewed on the DVD edition.Īlthough not explained in the movie, the severely decayed body that Clarice finds in the bathtub before the lights go out is heavily implied to be Mrs. The climax was also scripted slightly different: as Clarice shoots Bill, no window is broken the scene continues in pitch black, with Clarice only hearing Bill's dying gasps. When she calls Crawford later, he tells her he was reinstated because Lecter's tip fortunately checked out. He reluctantly agrees, giving her money and a phone number where she can reach him. Clarice asks Crawford's permission to go to Belvedere as a civilian to re-investigate the first victim's room with her new perspective.
However, the Director and Krendler are only interested in blaming them for Lecter's escape Clarice is suspended from the Academy, and Crawford ordered to take a leave of absence after transferring the case. After Lecter's escape, Clarice and Crawford present their suspicions about Buffalo Bill possibly knowing his first victim to the FBI Director. This is why during their final meeting in the movie, Hannibal asks Clarice if she came for "one last wheedle before booted off the case", and the guard says he has orders to put her on a plane.
At Catherine's room, she is confronted with an angry senator Martin and Paul Krendler the latter informs her that both she and Crawford are now off the case, and orders her to take a plane back to the Academy. Crawford wants Clarice to return to the Academy, but she offers instead to go back to Hannibal for one last talk, and to check Catherine Martin's apartment for more clues. When the fake FBI deal with Lecter falls through, Crawford and Clarice discuss possible repercussions (he is probably facing early retirement). After initial resistance due to privacy issues, the hospital relents and cooperates. Based on Hannibal Lecter's tip, Jack Crawford requests the Johns Hopkins Hospital to check if Buffalo Bill could be among the men rejected for gender reassignment. An elaborate subplot was scripted and largely filmed, but simplified for the final movie.
